Cleistocalyx operculatus
Cleistocalyx leaf (Cleistocalyx operculatus) comes from a small tree of five or six metres, with leathery, broadly oval leaves 8 to 20cm long, spotted brown on both faces, and small greenish-white flowers in pyramid-shaped clusters. It grows wild and is cultivated in almost every province of Vietnam, chiefly for the leaves, which have long been boiled into an everyday drink. They may simply be picked and dried, or first chopped, rinsed of sap and packed into a basket to ferment until evenly blackened, then washed and dried; leaves handled that way brew the better. Leaf, young shoot and bud all carry the plant's distinctive pleasant scent.
