Coral Tree Leaf
Erythrina orientalis
Coral tree leaf (Erythrina orientalis) comes from a tree of 10 to 20 metres with short spines on its trunk, growing throughout Vietnam and favouring the coast, and planted for hedging and for ornament. Each leaf carries three leaflets, the middle one broader than it is long at 10 to 15cm, the side pair triangular; the flowers are bright red and clustered, and the black pods, 15 to 30cm long, are pinched in between their five or six kidney-shaped seeds. Leaves are taken fresh or dried, and it is their use for wrapping nem that gives the tree its Vietnamese name, vông nem.
