Mint
Mentha arvensis
Mint (Mentha arvensis) is a perennial herb of ten to sixty centimetres, its square, hairy stems carrying opposite toothed leaves and whorls of small purple or pale pink flowers in the leaf axils. It grows wild in Vietnam in lowland and mountain country - Sa Pa, Tam Đảo, Ba Vì, Bắc Cạn, Sơn La - and is cultivated for leaf and stem around Nghĩa Trai in Hưng Yên and Đại Yên in Hà Nội. Plants are cut three or four times a year, first in June or July and again at full flower, then bundled and dried in the shade. The scent is sharply menthol, more pungent than European peppermint.
