Mugwort
Artemisia vulgaris
Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) is a perennial herb of fifty to sixty centimetres, its grooved stems carrying alternate, deeply lobed leaves that are dark green and smooth above and ash-white beneath under a felt of fine hairs, topped by branching sprays of small flowerheads. It grows wild through much of Vietnam and across Asia and Europe; Vietnamese households keep a few plants by the house rather than field-scale plots. Leaf and young branch are cut in June, around the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, and dried in the shade. The dried leaf is aromatic, its oil mostly cineole and thujone, and it is steeped in boiling water like tea.
