Premna Leaf
Premna serratifolia
Premna leaf (Premna serratifolia) comes from a small, many-branched shrub that sometimes climbs and sometimes bears thorns, growing wild throughout Vietnam and in Laos and Cambodia, as well as India, Indonesia, the Philippines and Australia. Its thin leaves vary in shape, ovate to oval, from 10 to 16cm long, with margins either plain or faintly scalloped, and small pale-green flowers cluster at the branch tips. Leaves are picked all year round, washed, then dried in the sun or an oven, sometimes toasted golden in a pan. Vietnamese cooks eat them with gỏi cá, raw fish salad. The whole plant is fragrant, the leaf scent aromatic with a sharp edge.
