Rice Paddy Herb
Limnophila aromatica
Rice paddy herb (Limnophila aromatica), rau om in Vietnamese, is a low creeping herb with brittle stems 20 to 30 cm long and smooth, stalkless leaves set in opposite pairs, or sometimes in threes, that half-clasp the stem and are lightly toothed at the edge. It grows wild and is also cultivated throughout Vietnam, and the plant is strongly scented. Growers in the southern provinces distinguish a green form from a purple one, which is scarcer. It is used fresh or dried, and in the South it is the flavouring stirred into sour soups and fish soups.
