Siam Weed
Chromolaena odorata
Siam weed (Chromolaena odorata) is a bushy herb growing in clumps of two metres or more, with spreading, softly hairy branches and opposite, toothed, ovate leaves on short stalks, each marked by three main veins. Heads of pink flowers open in late winter and early spring, ripening to small five-angled hairy seeds. Carried to Vietnam from the Antilles, it now covers waste ground, roadsides and abandoned paddy and reaches up into the hills, growing fast through the rains and resprouting strongly after cutting, so leaves can be taken all year. They smell rank and taste pungent; young ones are bruised and steeped in hot water.
