Slender Carpetweed
Glinus oppositifolius
Slender carpetweed (Glinus oppositifolius) is a low, sprawling perennial herb with smooth trailing stems and narrow lance-shaped leaves two to two and a half centimetres long, set in uneven whorls of two to five. Long-stalked flowers, pale green and without petals, gather in twos to fives in the leaf axils from April to July, followed by little capsules of kidney-shaped seeds. It grows wild on dry sandy ground along rivers and the coast and in dry fields across the Vietnamese lowlands, plentifully in Tiền Giang and Hậu Giang. The whole plant is pulled, best before it flowers, washed and dried. It tastes bitter, and is simmered in fish soup.
