Cherokee Rose Hip Extract

Rosa laevigata

Cherokee rose (Rosa laevigata), kim anh in Vietnamese, is a scrambling shrub that runs up to ten metres through scrub and bamboo, its stems set with prickles hooked back like a garden rose's. Each leaf has three toothed leaflets, and the flowers are white, solitary at the shoot tips and five to eight centimetres across. The part taken is the cup-shaped hip: glossy yellow-red, bristling with prickles, ripening from August to October on the hills of Cao Bằng and Lạng Sơn. Picked by hand and dried, then tumbled to knock off the prickles and dried again, it is kim anh tử. The flesh is sour and tannic.
