Dried Areca Flower

Areca catechu

The areca palm (Areca catechu) grows a straight, slender trunk 15 to 20 m tall and 10 to 15 cm thick, bare of leaves but ringed with their old scars and carrying a single crown of large pinnate fronds at the top. Its flowers are massed on a spadix whose sheath drops early: small male flowers above, each with three green sepals, three white petals and six stamens, and larger female flowers below. The male flowers are the white, fragrant ones. Areca is planted throughout Vietnam for its fruit, widely in the south around Mỹ Tho, Bến Tre, Rạch Giá and Cần Thơ.
