Cleistocalyx operculatus
Vối (Cleistocalyx operculatus) is a small myrtle-family tree of five or six metres whose leaves, young shoots and flower buds all give off a particular pleasant scent when crushed; the leaf carries about 4% of a sweet-smelling essential oil and very little tannin. It grows wild and is planted in nearly every province of Vietnam, and also in China and elsewhere in tropical Asia. Households have long boiled the leaves and buds to make a drink. The flowers are small, greenish-white and almost stalkless, borne in pyramid-shaped sprays; the buds are picked before they open and dried, then steeped in hot water.
