Michelia flowers come from a small tree of the magnolia family, its young shoots softly downy and its leaves hairy underneath. Each bloom carries many long, slightly pointed tepals set in a spiral around a crowd of short stamens; the tree flowers around July and fruits in October, the fruit a tight cluster of follicles. A plant of the Indo-Malayan region, it grows in the forests of the Bảy Núi range in An Giang, though never in great numbers. The flowers are gathered fresh and used to scent tea and to perfume coconut oil. Their fragrance is soft and sweet, and best before the bloom fades.
