Purple Passionflower
Passiflora incarnata
Purple passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) is not the lạc tiên that scrambles wild across Vietnam but a related North American species: a herbaceous perennial climber, native to the southeastern United States, which dies back to the ground in cold winters and runs up again from root suckers in spring. It climbs by tendrils, carries alternate, toothed three-lobed leaves, and from early summer opens fragrant flowers with white petals beneath a crown of pinkish-purple filaments, followed by egg-shaped fruit that ripens yellow. It is grown as a crop in Florida, India, Italy and Spain. The flowering vine — leaves, stems and flowers — is cut, dried gently and brewed as a grassy, hay-like infusion.
