Rose Bud
Rosa chinensis
Rose buds are picked from Rosa chinensis, an upright or scrambling shrub of half a metre to a metre and a half, its young canes set with curved thorns and its pinnate leaves carrying five to seven smooth, oval leaflets. A plant of East Asia, it was brought into Vietnamese gardens as an ornamental for the sake of the flowers: large, fragrant, and varying from white through pink to red. The shrub blooms all year but chiefly between May and September, and it is in those months that the buds are gathered and dried. Steeped in hot water they taste faintly sweet.
