Roselle Seed
Hibiscus sabdariffa
Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa), known in Vietnam as bụp giấm, is an upright annual herb of 0.5-3 m, its smooth purplish stems carrying broad leaves cut into three to five lobes. Most probably African in origin, it is now found throughout the tropics, a short-day plant that stands up well to drought. The flowers, 3-5 cm long and pinkish to yellow with a purple centre, never open fully; behind each one the calyx swells into a fleshy red cup that outgrows the fruit within. It is that fruit which holds the seeds: kidney-shaped, almost hairless and blackish-brown.
