Screwpine Fruit
Pandanus tectorius
Screwpine fruit comes from Pandanus tectorius, a small tree of three to four metres that branches at the top and sends many prop roots down to the ground. Its strap-shaped leaves, one to two metres long, sit in tufts at the branch ends, spined along midrib and margins. The drooping male spadix, sheathed in white, is strongly scented; the female head ripens into a stalked, egg-shaped mass 16 to 22 centimetres long and orange-yellow, built of angular drupes with hard, pitted stones. In Vietnam the plant grows wild and is also planted as hedging, for its scented flowers, and for leaves to weave mats and bags.
