Chinese Honey Locust Pod
Gleditsia australis
Chinese honey locust pod (Gleditsia australis) is the fruit of a tree six to eight metres tall, its trunk set with clusters of branched spines 10 to 15cm long. The pods are 10 to 12cm long and 15 to 20mm wide, straight or curved like a sickle, thin except where the ten or so pale yellow-brown seeds swell them, and dusted with a pale green bloom. The tree grows wild and cultivated across northern Vietnam, Cát Bà island alone holding some 40,000, and in southern China. Pods ripen in October and November and dry to a glossy black. Their water washes hair and launders silk and coloured wool.
