Ant Plant Root Extract
Hydnophytum formicarum
The ant plant (Hydnophytum formicarum), bí kỳ nam in Vietnamese, is an epiphyte of the coffee family that lives in partnership with ants: its stem swells into a large, rough-surfaced tuber which the ants gnaw into a maze of chambers and holes. Thick, glossy leaves sit in opposite pairs, and small stalkless white flowers cluster four or five together in the leaf axils, giving slender fruit that turn orange around December and January. It grows on trees in the secondary forests of southern Vietnam, including the hills of An Giang. The tuber is sliced thin, sun-dried, then scalded and roasted in a dry pan.
