Atractylodes
Atractylodes macrocephala
Atractylodes (Atractylodes macrocephala) is a perennial growing to about 80 centimetres, its lower leaves deeply cut into three lobes, its large flower heads set in a bell of seven overlapping rows of bracts, the florets white below and purple-red above. Underground the root swells into a thick, fleshy rhizome, and that is the part taken. Most of it still comes from China, where it is grown chiefly in Zhejiang and Hunan; it has been introduced into Vietnam and will grow in both the cold uplands and the hot lowlands. The rhizome is dug in the tenth lunar month, as the basal leaves yellow, then trimmed and dried whole or sliced.
