Platycodon grandiflorus
Balloon flower (Platycodon grandiflorus) is a perennial herb 60 to 90cm tall, named for the wide bell of its flower, from platys, broad, and codon, bell, which opens blue-purple or white and measures 3 to 5cm across. Its lower leaves are almost stalkless, set opposite or in whorls of three or four. The plant grows wild and is cultivated in China and the former Soviet Union, and is being introduced into Vietnam, raised from seed. It is the thick root that is used, dug from plants four or five years old, best in autumn or winter, then washed, scraped of its outer skin and dried in the sun.
