Clerodendrum chinense
Clerodendrum chinense, known in Vietnam as bạch đồng nữ, is a shrub of one to one and a half metres that grows wild throughout the country, in the hills and in the lowlands, and also in southern China, the Philippines and Indonesia. Its broad leaves, up to twenty centimetres long and coarsely toothed, are borne on long stalks, and the bark has a faintly rank smell; the flowers, pink or white, are fragrant and crowd into flat domed heads about ten centimetres across. Leaves are picked year-round, best as flowering begins, and dried; roots are dug, washed, dried and sliced thin for simmering in water.
