Medicinal Herbs
Coptis
Coptis chinensis
Coptis (Coptis chinensis) is a small perennial herb of the buttercup family, 20-35 cm tall, its long-stalked leaves rising from the rhizome and each divided into three to five coarsely toothed leaflets; in early spring a stalk about 10 cm high carries three or four white flowers. In Vietnam it grows wild on mountains at 1,500-2,000 metres in Lào Cai around Sa Pa, along the Hoàng Liên Sơn range and through the north-west, though wild stands do not meet domestic and export demand. It can also be raised from seed at 1,200-2,000 metres and lifted after five years. The rhizome is dug in autumn and winter, washed and dried.
