Indian Lettuce
Lactuca indica
Indian lettuce (Lactuca indica), bồ công anh in Vietnamese, is a wild lettuce rather than the European plant of that name: an upright herb usually between sixty centimetres and a metre, occasionally reaching three, on a smooth stem with few or no branches. The lower leaves grow to thirty centimetres, coarsely toothed or cut into lobes and almost stalkless; those above are shorter and plainer. Break a leaf or the stem and a milky white latex runs out, slightly bitter on the tongue. The flower heads are yellow, sometimes purple. It grows wild across the northern provinces and is rarely planted; the leaves are used fresh or dried, and simmered into a decoction.
