Dipsacus
Dipsacus asper
Tục đoạn (Dipsacus) is a wild upland plant of northern Vietnam, found in grassy savanna on limestone and clay soils between 1,400 and 1,700 metres, most abundantly around Sapa and Bình Lư in Lào Cai and in Hà Giang and Tuyên Quang. Its root has been gathered since about 1935, dug from August to October with the crown and rootlets trimmed off and then dried. In some places it is first smoked over a wood fire until soft and heaped under sacking to draw the damp back, until the skin turns yellow or grey and the core green. An extract tastes faintly sweet, then a little drying on the tongue.
