Eucommia Bark
Eucommia ulmoides
Đỗ trọng (Eucommia ulmoides) is a tree that can reach ten to twenty metres, its alternate leaves broadly oval and toothed; tear one across and fine white threads stretch between the halves. Male and female flowers grow on separate trees, and the flat, spindle-shaped fruit is about three centimetres long. The tree is not found wild in Vietnam, and although plantings in Hanoi and at Sapa have taken, the bark is still largely imported from China, where it is grown in Yunnan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Sichuan and Guizhou. Stripped in summer, it is pressed flat and stacked six or seven days to sweat until the inner face darkens, then dried.
