Talinum paniculatum
Fameflower (Talinum paniculatum) is a low herb, annual or longer lived, with an upright green stem to about 60cm and thick, slightly fleshy, glossy leaves shaped like a spoon. Through the summer it carries loose sprays of small purple-red flowers barely 6mm across, followed by tiny ash-grey capsules. It grows wild and is widely planted in Vietnam, and in a number of Chinese provinces from Zhejiang to Guangdong, raised easily from seed or from a piece of root. The root is dug after a year or more, washed, trimmed of its fine side roots and dried; freshly lifted it is a clear pink, darkening to grey-black in store.
