Figwort

Scrophularia ningpoensis

Figwort (Scrophularia ningpoensis) is a tall herb reaching one and a half to two metres, with a square, grooved green stem and pointed, finely toothed leaves set in opposite pairs, the lower ones larger and longer stalked. Small tubular flowers, purple in this species, are carried in umbels near the tops of the stems. The plant came to Vietnam recently and is now grown in many places; before that the root was brought in from China. Sown from seed in spring, the roots are lifted in October and November, trimmed and washed, then sunned by day and kept warm overnight until they darken, and finally dried through.
