Glochidion eriocarpum
Glochidion (Glochidion eriocarpum) is a small shrub whose young branches are purple-red under dense short white hairs, ageing to pale green. The alternate leaves are oval and tapered, 6 to 8cm long, downy on both faces, more so beneath. Very small single-sex flowers sit in the leaf axils in threes and fours in March and April, the males white with pale yellow sepals; the wheel-shaped fruit turns red as it ripens. It grows wild across Vietnam, though it is gathered mainly in Bắc Giang, where branches and leaves are picked and simply dried. Shaken with water, the plant froths, which is said to give it its Vietnamese name.
