Hairy Pennywort

Hairy pennywort (Hydrocotyle nepalensis) is a creeping herb whose thick, round, succulent stems trail across the ground for 0.5 to 1.2 m. Its long-stalked leaves are kidney-shaped, with seven or eight deep rounded, toothed lobes and coarse hairs where the veins meet the stalk; tiny stalkless flowers sit in clusters of small umbels. It grows in damp, bright places along streams and forest edges up to 1500 m, in provinces from Sơn La and Lạng Sơn south to Lâm Đồng and Ninh Thuận. Young leaves are blanched and eaten at once, cooked in soup, boiled or pickled. The taste is pungent and slightly bitter.
