Holy Basil
Ocimum tenuiflorum
Holy basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum) is a perennial herb of the mint family, thirty to eighty centimetres tall, with a square purple stem, hairy toothed leaves that are often purple themselves, and small purple or white flowers set in whorls of six to eight at the tips of the shoots. It grows wild and is also cultivated throughout Vietnam. The flowering tops, stem and leaves and flowers together, are cut while the plant is in bloom and dried in the sun or gently by heat, or used fresh. The whole plant carries a characteristic aroma, and its essential oil is largely eugenol, the compound from which vanillin is made.
