Job's Tears
Coix lacryma-jobi
Job's tears (Coix lacryma-jobi) is an annual grass of one to two metres, its smooth glossy stems ribbed lengthwise and its lance-shaped leaves 10 to 40 centimetres long with a stout midrib. Male and female flowers sit on the same spike, the males above, and each grain ripens enclosed in the sheath of a bract. It grows wild in cool damp places in Vietnam's mountains, along streams and gullies, and is now widely planted, sown in late spring on alluvial or sandy soil. Whole plants are cut in late autumn, threshed, and the kernels dried, then used as they are or dry-roasted to gold or to black.
