Pteris multifida
Ladder brake (Pteris multifida) is a small fern of fifteen to twenty-five centimetres, its fronds divided into long narrow segments with toothed edges, the end segment longest, so that a single leaf looks like a branching stem — the Vietnamese name likens it to a cockerel's tail. Fertile fronds carry a continuous line of spore cases along each margin. It is common in northern and central Vietnam on rock faces, earth banks, well surrounds and roadsides, in damp, airy, cool places. The knotty horizontal rhizome is dug with the fronds, sliced thin and dried; it is slightly sweet and bitter, with a sharp, penetrating aroma.
