Mallotus
Mallotus apelta
Mallotus (Mallotus apelta), bùm bụp or bùng bục in Vietnamese, is a shrub or small tree of one to two metres, occasionally five, its young shoots covered in pale yellow hairs and the undersides of its leaves in a dense white felt. The leaves are alternate and toothed, whole or broadly lobed; male and female flowers hang on separate drooping catkins up to fifty centimetres long, giving way to soft-spined capsules that open on glossy black seeds. It grows on hillsides and in open forest in the Bảy Núi range of An Giang. The roots are dug year-round, washed, sliced and dried; they taste slightly bitter and astringent.
