Melastoma
Melastoma malabathricum
Melastoma (Melastoma malabathricum) is a bushy shrub of one to three metres, its squared young branches clothed in scales and stiff hairs, its paired leaves rough to the touch and five- or seven-veined. Violet to pink flowers open at the shoot tips, and the fleshy fruit splits open irregularly when ripe, exposing soft dark-blue pulp and orange seeds; it is eaten as a snack and yields a purple dye. It grows scattered through scrub, thin forest and forest edges on poor, acid soils, from Ba Vì near Hà Nội south through the southern provinces. Leafy shoots and leaves are gathered and sold fresh or dried in local markets.
