Notoginseng

Panax notoginseng

Notoginseng (Panax notoginseng) is a perennial herb of about forty centimetres with compound leaves, grown in Vietnam high in the mountains of Hà Giang, Cao Bằng and Lào Cai. The root is the part harvested, and only from plants of five years or more: the old roots are dug, washed free of soil and dried hard, coming out as inverted cones or cylinders with a pale greyish-yellow skin. A dried root carries a faint, distinctive scent and tastes bitter at first, then slightly sweet. It is ground to a powder or simmered in water.
