Passionflower Extract

Passiflora foetida

Passionflower (Passiflora foetida) is a soft-stemmed climbing vine whose stems and leaf edges are covered in fine hairs and whose tendrils coil into tight springs. It grows wild throughout Vietnam and has never been taken into cultivation; children pick its egg-shaped fruit, 2-3cm long, to eat. The leaves are alternate and heart-shaped, 6-10cm long, cut rather deeply into three lobes with wavy margins, and solitary flowers of five white to faintly violet petals, about 5.5cm across, open in April and May. The whole plant apart from the root is gathered, used fresh or dried in the sun, then simmered in water or steeped in spirit.
