Pond Apple
Annona glabra
Pond apple (Annona glabra) is a small, sparsely branched tree of two to five metres that looks much like a soursop. Its hairless oval leaves carry eight or nine pairs of side veins, and the yellow flowers, about two centimetres across, have six long petals blotched red inside. The fruit is seven to ten centimetres long, yellow-green and smooth-skinned, with soft white flesh and pale brown seeds, which are the part gathered; the ripe fruit is fragrant, though its flavour takes getting used to. Native to North America, the tree is planted along brackish creek banks and stands ditch water that is both salty and acid.
