Prepared Rehmannia

Rehmannia glutinosa

Prepared rehmannia (Rehmannia glutinosa) is a low-growing herb, 10-30cm tall and downy grey-white all over, with a rosette of toothed, obovate leaves and purple-red flowers in summer. The part used is the swollen rhizome. Once imported entirely from China and Korea, the plant was introduced to Vietnam in 1958 and is now grown across the provinces, lifted about six and a half months after planting. The washed, dried tuber is then steamed and sun-dried nine times over in earthenware, or, in the Vietnamese method, simmered with 40-degree spirit and, from the second round, crushed ginger, five to seven times until it turns glossy black.
