Prickly Chaff Flower
Achyranthes aspera
Prickly chaff flower (Achyranthes aspera), known in Vietnamese as cỏ xước, is a herb of the amaranth family that grows wild throughout Vietnam. Đỗ Tất Lợi describes it together with ngưu tất, Achyranthes bidentata, which is so like it that the two are confused: slender-stemmed and faintly four-angled, about a metre tall though sometimes two, with paired stalked leaves 5-12cm long, pointed and entire at the margin, and small flowers in spikes at the shoot tips and leaf axils. The root is dug, washed, dried in the sun or a dryer, then simmered in water; ngưu tất, brought from China and now grown here, has the thicker root.
