Spatholobus suberectus
Spatholobus suberectus belongs to a genus of about 29 lianas confined to tropical Asia, from India through southern China to western Malesia, the Philippines and Sulawesi. They are woody climbers with three-part leaves and small pea-type flowers, at home in evergreen and mixed dipterocarp forest, usually near open ground along rivers or roadsides, from the seashore to over 2,000 metres. Cut stems carry a reddish-brown exudate. The larger species in the genus, such as S. ferrugineus, run 50 metres through the trees on stems up to 15 cm thick, and their strong young stems are twisted into rough cordage.
