Stemona
Stemona tuberosa
Stemona (Stemona tuberosa) is a climbing vine six to eight metres long, with a slender, smooth stem and heart-shaped leaves marked by six to eight parallel veins running from stalk to tip. One or two large yellow-red flowers open in the leaf axils. It grows wild throughout Vietnam, in Hà Tây, Hòa Bình, Bắc Cạn and Thái Nguyên. Underground it carries a cluster of ten to thirty tubers, occasionally as many as a hundred, each fifteen to twenty centimetres long and yellowish white. These are dug in autumn and winter, washed, and dried in the sun or an oven. They taste sweet at first, then very bitter.
