Sweet Annie
Artemisia annua
Sweet Annie (Artemisia annua), thanh hao hoa vàng in Vietnamese, is an aromatic annual of the daisy family, up to a metre tall, growing in patches on hillsides and along streams, its soft-haired leaves cut twice into fine narrow segments. The flower heads are minute and pale yellow, gathered into open branching sprays; the foliage stays green, yellowing only in autumn. It grows wild in Lạng Sơn, Cao Bằng and Lào Cai and is cultivated in Quảng Ninh and Hưng Yên. Leafy stems and flowering tops are cut in August, as the buds form, and dried; young leaves are cooked in soup. The oil smells of camphor and eucalyptus.
