Yellow Yam
Dioscorea collettii
Yellow yam (Dioscorea collettii) is a climbing vine of the yam family, its twisted, hairless stem twining rightwards from a tuberous rhizome buried in the soil. The alternate leaves are triangular, up to 10 cm long, with seven veins running from the base. It grows at forest margins and along streams in evergreen broadleaf and bamboo forest, is recorded from Sơn La, is cultivated in Hanoi, and also occurs in India, Myanmar and China. It is grown in medicinal gardens and raised from rhizome pieces; the bitter rhizome is the part gathered, and the vine flowers in May and June and dies back in November and December.
