Bitter Melon Powder
Momordica charantia
Bitter melon (Momordica charantia) is a climbing vine with angular stems and alternate leaves cut into five to seven toothed lobes. Pale yellow flowers about two centimetres across open singly in the leaf axils and set a spindle-shaped fruit, eight to fifteen centimetres long, its skin raised into warty bumps; picked green-yellow, it ripens to a pinkish yellow, and the flat seeds inside sit in a blood-red membrane. It is grown in every province of Vietnam, north and south, cropping in the north from May to July and cooked as a vegetable, and is also found growing in southern China, India, Malaysia and the Philippines. The taste is markedly bitter.
