Katuk Powder
Sauropus androgynus
Katuk (Sauropus androgynus) is a small, smooth shrub that will reach a metre and a half to two metres, though constant picking usually keeps it to about a metre; its bark is green at first, then pale brown, and it throws up many straight branches. The leaves grow alternately along them, oval to oblong, 4 to 6cm long, entire-edged and almost stalkless. It grows wild and is planted all over Vietnam for those leaves, which are gathered fresh and cooked straight away, most often in canh, the everyday Vietnamese soup.
