Carica papaya
Papaya (Carica papaya) is a tropical tree of three to seven metres, its straight trunk marked with the scars of fallen leaf stalks and crowned with broad leaves cut into six to nine lobes on long hollow stalks. Native to tropical America, it is grown throughout Vietnam, raised from seed, in crop eight to ten months after planting and most heavily from the third year. The fruit is a large fleshy oval, 20 to 30 centimetres long, its thick flesh green at first and turning orange-yellow as it ripens; ripe, it is about nine-tenths water, with a mass of peppercorn-sized black seeds in the hollow middle.
