Bird's Eye Chili
Capsicum frutescens
Bird's eye chili (Capsicum frutescens) is a small, much-branched shrub half a metre to a metre high, with pointed oval leaves and solitary white or pale yellow flowers in the leaf axils. Native to India, it is now grown almost everywhere for its fruit; some fifty races belong to this one species, so the pods vary widely, slender or round, red, yellow, purple or green. They are picked when ripe and dried, then used whole or ground to a powder in cooking, while the leaves are gathered fresh through the year. The taste is fiercely pungent, and the fruit carries capsaicin.
