Senna obtusifolia
Cassia seed (Senna obtusifolia, thảo quyết minh) comes from a small leguminous plant, 30 to 90 centimetres tall, occasionally 1.5 metres, with alternate pinnate leaves of two to four pairs of leaflets and bright yellow flowers borne singly or in twos and threes in the leaf axils. It grows wild throughout Vietnam. From September to November the ripe pods, cylindrical and 12 to 14 centimetres long, are picked, dried, threshed for their twenty-five or so seeds and dried again. The seeds are glossy light brown, bevelled at both ends like flints and faintly bitter; roasted dark they take on the smell of coffee, and are brewed in place of tea.
