Capsicum annuum
Chilli (Capsicum annuum) is a smooth, much-branched herb, annual in cooler countries and living on for years in the tropics, where the lower stem turns woody. Its leaves are narrow and 2 to 4 centimetres long, its flowers sit singly in the leaf axils, and the fruit either hangs down or points straight up, round or long and tapered, ripening yellow or red. It is grown everywhere in Vietnam and used as a seasoning, the fruit picked ripe and used fresh or dried in sun or kiln, the leaves used fresh. The heat sits in the placenta inside the pod; some kinds are fierce, some mild.
