Long Pepper
Piper longum
Long pepper (Piper longum) is a creeping vine of the pepper family that trails at the base and sends its flowering branches upright, bare of hairs, with short-stalked leaves that are oval and tapering, heart-shaped where they meet the stalk. Male and female flowers grow on separate spikes, and it is these spikes, the little fruits fused into a single cluster, that are gathered while still green, before they ripen, and dried in the sun or over gentle heat. The plant grows wild in both northern and southern Vietnam, and is cultivated in India. The dried fruit holds piperine, sesamin and about 0.25% essential oil.
